This one day workshop introduces the fundamentals of quickly setting up formal and informal portraits. Through lecture, demonstrations and discussions, you will learn the important elements of gesture, expression, pose, props, environment, and of course lighting. The morning session will include the slide lecture and discussion on the aesthetics of portrait photography with natural and artificial light as well as tips on use of the pop-up and shoe-mounted flash with additional light shapers.

The afternoon session will be a fun demonstration and hands-on opportunity to ensure that students are seeing lighting better, getting their desired results and understanding how to direct a portrait subject quickly and easily. Some continuous light and studio flash set-ups as well as lighting accessories will be provided for you to play with. We will be accompanied by one of my assistants for additional help and instruction.

Students should bring camera, flash and accessories, instruction manual for camera and flash, and notebook. For the afternoon session, you will be broken into groups to share the equipment and each other while alternating roles as photographer and model, exploring the particular dynamic of that relationship, and mining its potential for creativity. You will be able to learn the ins and outs from both sides of the camera.

Students will leave this workshop with greater confidence in photographing under a variety of lighting conditions with a variety of subjects.
