Set in the moody and creepy atmosphere of the vacant Eastern State Penitentiary, The Going to Prison for Creative Lighting Techniques Workshop, featuring Painting with Light, Fill Flash & HDR Lighting, will provide artistic insight into capturing the moods and essence of this unique location in the heart of Philadelphia. Nancy Ori brings a fine balance of creative sensibility and skill in the craft of photography to maximize your learning experience. The workshop is designed for advanced beginners or intermediate photographers who already know their basic camera functions.

Part 1 of this workshop includes an illustrated lecture and discussion to include lighting and software options, technical information incorporating fill flash and Painting with Light techniques, as well as multiple exposure information to create High Dynamic Range images (HDR). Discussions will also include the use of flash diffusers, colored filters, getting the correct exposure, what software is necessary for additional processing of finished images and what to expect when you get there. This session is geared to get you totally ready with the lighting and exposure expertise necessary to successfully capture some great images within this challenging shooting environment. It is an integral part of the workshop.

Part 2 of the workshop will take place on location at the Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) in Philadelphia. We will start our day with introductions and orientation. This was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, just the way we love it! It is a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks, peeling paint and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence or true regret in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. To photographers, this location presents incredibly graphic, creative and exciting photo opportunities. During your time at ESP, Nancy Ori and her assistant will be available to offer their creative and technical insights.

Attendees will be sent a detailed schedule of activities, transportation information and suggestions of what to bring and wear. Tripods are a must. There will be a loaner tripod available.

Slide Lecture: Creative Lighting at Eastern State Penitentiary, including HDR.

Prerequisite and Requirements:

Beginning Level 1 course on camera operation. If you are interested in this trip but are not familiar with your camera yet, you should sign up for some private lessons in advance so you are not wasting valuable time learning it there. This is a challenging place to shoot so knowing your basic camera operation will be helpful so you will understand the lecture and instructions. Once there, it will be each student’s responsibility to seek out help if you need to ask questions. Faculty will be wandering throughout the buildings and are there to help you.
