We are going to have a lot of fun playing with all kinds of light sources that you might find around the house, hardware store or camera shop. The list will include: pop up flash, shoe-mounted flash units, hot lights, studio strobes, flashlights, book lights, lamp light, and any other light source that uses electricity or a battery that you want to bring along….and of course, sun light.
The goal of the workshop is to explore lighting as a form of creative expression and think outside the box increasing confidence in a variety of situations you might find yourself. We will also try out a whole host of accessories to shape the light. Some of these will be home made and really cheap versions of expensive items on the market and others will be the expensive ones so you can see if there is really a difference. Bottom line, we will be photographing indoors and out.
Lectures and discussions will be on getting correct exposures in difficult lighting situations by using exposure compensation; use of HDR, a lighting technique that incorporates multiple exposures; fill flash indoors and outside; combining different light sources with different white balance for interesting effects; and painting with light.
Feedback from former students indicates that possibly the most valuable part of the workshop will be a series of lighting demos by Nancy Ori and the discussions that evolve out of those experiences. Learning to see and control light better is the goal of the workshop. Students should have some familiarity on how their cameras work. This workshop is about lighting, not how to work your camera except how those controls relate to the topic. Bring camera, instruction manual, and lunch.
